As a veteran, you have tons of opportunities and resources to jump back into the workforce. There are a handful of programs for veteran assistance designed specifically to help you ease back into working with excellence and purpose. 

Jobs for Veterans State Grants (JVSG)

JVSG has a staff ready to train you for the career you want. They also have resources to help you get those jobs. The goal is to tailor your learning experiences and resources to you as an individual.

Transition Assistance Program (TAP)

Transitioning from active duty back to civilization can be difficult for the veteran and the family. This organization trains veterans and their families so that they are prepared for this next stage of life. They also offer plenty of information, resources, and tools to help your transition. 

HIRE Vets Medallion Program (HVMP)

This program focuses on rewarding businesses that help out veterans. Here are the reward recipients. Look through the list to find jobs that are seeking out veterans specifically to keep this reward!

National Veterans’ Training Institute (NVTI)

This training institute works to train individuals in their specific career fields. They focus on teaching veterans how to be excellent so they can succeed in their line of work. 

Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP)

This federal program recognizes and addresses the issues that veterans face as they reintegrate into the workforce. This is a grant that focuses on competitive employment for homeless veterans. If you’re struggling to find a job or have enough money to have a home, definitely check this program out.

Uniformed Service Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)

This act stops any business from discriminating against you because of your military experience. You’re protected by the government to fulfill the duties of your employment. If you feel as if your company has discriminated against you because of your status or past experiences as a veteran, look into your rights.

Financial Help for Veterans and Their Families

There are plenty of programs that don’t only help veterans, but also their families. If you’re a family member of a veteran, check out these programs to see what they offer. 

The National Association of American Veterans, Inc. (NAAV)

NAAV has so many helpful resources for veterans and their families. They provide help with housing, emergencies, legal, training, employment, and counseling costs for wounded service members. 

The American Legion Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA)

This program is only for the children of parents in the military. These children are given grants to help with basic needs.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)

As the largest and oldest program for war veterans, the VFW is dedicated to advocating for veterans. This program focuses specifically on those who are fighting or currently fighting in foreign wars.

Rural Veterans Coordination Pilot Program

This program provides grants that are veteran-focused and community-based to companies and organizations. The money from this grant goes towards helping veterans transition from military service back into the workforce.

Veterans Cemetery Grants Program

All veterans deserve a proper gravesite when they pass away. This federal  program gives money to states, territories, and tribal governments to provide proper gravesites for these veterans. 

Programs to Prevent Homelessness for Veterans

There is a strong correlation between veterans and homelessness. In fact, about 23% of the homeless population are veterans. 

This is devastating considering the amount of sacrifice they gave for this country’s freedom. These programs are set in place so that veterans can get back on their feet after duty. Most of these aim to pay bills, find local housing, and offer grants to veterans who are in need.

Resources for Wounded Veterans

Operation Family Fund and Coalition to Support America’s Heroes

Both of these programs were designed for Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. If you were injured or disabled in duty for either of these two, or Operation New Dawn, you have benefits waiting for you. These programs will pay for medical expenses, living expenses, utilities, and even needs like food or transportation costs. 

Operation First Response 

Operation First Response provides help with injuries from being in the military or as a first responder. This includes medical costs, help transitioning to civilization, and financial or personal needs for veterans and their family members. 

Semper Fi & America’s Fund

This fund prioritizes offering not only immediate financial help but also lifetime support to severely injured or ill veterans. This includes providing resources to the veterans’ families as well. 

USACares 

This organization assists post-9/11 active duty personnel and their families. This includes food, housing, utilities, training, and emergency help. 

Financial Help for Women Veterans

Only 11% of the veteran population is female. There is a plan to increase this number drastically in the coming years. Because of this, there are certain programs offering assistance for female veterans specifically.

These programs offer financial assistance for basic needs, educational needs, and even help with a variety of resources. Even gas costs can be covered!
